Dees of the Cyclotron (Photo courtesy of TRIUMF)
This lesson allows students to establish the formula for relativistic momentum from experimental data.
DVD (15 minutes)
This lesson uses a very clear but not flashy video from TRIUMF
called "Approaching the Speed of Light". It shows the cyclotron, beam
line and bending magnets and uses animations explains clearly how particle speeds
and momenta are measured and then provides data for the students to analyse.
You can get a copy of this DVD and another exploring how electromagnetism is
used at TRIUMF for free here.
Worksheet (30 minutes)
The DVD comes with a worksheet but I put together my own worksheet.
Instructions for the teacher and answers can be found in the teacher's
notes. The worksheet with answers has been translated into French by Nanouk
Pare of Montreal. Merci Nanouk!
