Educational Resources from CERN

A chart of resources list various teaching resources with details about the format (PPt, game, video, doc etc.), who produced it (teachers or CERN) and the level of difficulty. My review for these is below:

1) The accelerating cavity ‘game’ is ridiculously limited!

2) The LHC game wasn’t working but I wasn’t impressed before anyway.

3) Microboy is annoying and I’m not sure what the educational point of it is.

4) *Powers of ten uses the standard format based on photos from CERN. Limited information with the photos.

5) **** A keyhole in particle physics is really great!

This is really useful! It was developed in 2001 and it deals with the LEP and students examine the decay of the Z particle in 3-D. The physics of the detectors is very similar to that of the LHC, so it is still topical. For details of how to use this resources see the Z Particle in 3D.

6) *** Atlas Detector Movie
This is a ten-minute movie that goes over the various parts of the ATLAS detector, one of the two big detectors for the LHC. The detectors are very similar in basic physics with what was used at CERN with the LEP and what was used at Fermilab to discover the top quark. They all have trackers, EM calorimeters, hadron calorimeters and muon detectors. ATLAS is huge!

7) **** Bubble Chamber Analysis
This is a great resource for seeing many bubble chamber images and learning how to analyze them. A simplified version can be found in Bubble Chamber Detective.
